The specialized knowledge and skills that farmers possess are invaluable. Having an apprenticeship program on your farm is one way that you can provide an opportunity for interested apprentices to learn from your experience while, in exchange, providing an extra set of hands on the farm. The enthusiasm that apprentices bring can also be very energizing for participating farmers, and the process of mentoring and passing along the skills of sustainable farming can be extremely rewarding.
If you are a farmer interested in having apprentices:
Complete and submit the farmer application (or the farm host renewal form if you are a returning member).
Pay your application fee (CAN $35-45, sliding scale) , which you will be prompted to do once you fill out the application. After that, we'll be in touch with a welcome email that contains more information. Current WWOOF host? $10 discount! If you are considering becoming a WWOOF host, there is a $10 discount there for new hosts as well.
SOIL will put a brief description of your farm and photo(s) on this website. Based on these descriptions, apprenticeship applicants choose five farms they are interested in, and, whenever your farm is chosen, we send them the full farm profile you filled out in your application. If apprentice applicants wish, after they review their first 5 farms, the coordinator will send them another 5 farms to review.
